II. — Adj., vieilli. Qui incite à l'action, est propre à stimuler l'activité physique ou psychique. Remèdes incitants (Ac. 1798-1878). Si cette femme se sentait piquée par une fantaisie assez incitante pour la compromettre, elle savait alors sortir de son boudoir (BALZAC, Langeais, 1834, p. 268). Il ne semble pas qu'il y ait d'endroits plus reposants et, en même temps, plus incitants pour un peintre ou un écrivain qui voudrait œuvrer à la gloire de Dieu, un tableau ou un livre (HUYSMANS, Oblat, t. 2, 1903, p. 143).
— Emploi subst. masc. sing. à valeur neutre. L'homme, pour aller de l'avant, a toujours besoin de l'incitant du désir ou de la crainte (BOUCHER DE PERTHES, Antiq. celt., t. 3, 1864, p. 442).
